An Indiana man has been sentenced after he fatally shot the mother of his child while she was dropping the son off at daycare.
According to PEOPLE, 35-year-old Orlando Mitchell was sentenced to 66 years in prison in connection to the 2022 murder of Krystal Walton, 32, his ex-girlfriend and mother of his son.
Mitchell’s sentencing comes after a jury found him guilty of killing Walton outside Charity Child Care in Indianapolis. He was also found guilty of invasion of privacy.
According to authorities, Mitchell waited for Walton to show up at the facility, ran up behind her, and shot her seven times as she was walking back to her car after dropping their son off. Body camera footage shows Mitchell saying, “I shot that b---h!” and "I shot that b---h in the face!" Police said that Mitchell also shot Walton in front of several children.
Prior to the shooting, Walton had obtained a protective order against Mitchell and told police she was afraid he would kill her. Mitchell’s mother told police that her son was upset about not being able to see his son.
"If he couldn't see his son, she wasn't gonna be in his life either," the mother told police, according to the affidavit.
