President Donald Trump has declared that he will block federal funding for colleges or universities that allow "illegal protests."

On Tuesday (March 4), Trump took to his Truth Social platform to make the announcement, even threatening to arrest students who participate in alleged illegal protests, per The Hill.

“All Federal Funding will STOP for any College, School, or University that allows illegal protests. Agitators will be imprisoned/or permanently sent back to the country from which they came,” the president wrote on Truth social.

“American students will be permanently expelled or, depending on on the crime, arrested. NO MASKS! Thank you for your attention to this matter,” Trump added.

It's unclear what mechanism the president would use to enforce the proposed arrests or deportations of students.

Trump's announcement comes just a day after several federal agencies announced that their contracts and grants with Columbia University were under review over allegations of antisemitism on campus. It also follows an incident at Barnard College, where pro-Palestinian protestors reportedly injured an employee as they tried to get into a building.

This isn't the first time the president has made remarks about deporting foreign students who protest.

“One thing I do is, any student that protests, I throw them out of the country. You know, there are a lot of foreign students. As soon as they hear that, they’re going to behave,” Trump previously said at an event to donors.
