A North Carolina man is facing charges in the brutal killing of his girlfriend.
According to PEOPLE, 41-year-old Rebecca Rene Carter was found dead with a knife in her chest at her apartment located in the back of a CubeSmart storage facility, where she worked as the manager.
Police said they responded to a report on February 19 from a man, identified as Travis Huff, who said he killed his girlfriend at the apartment. Huff, 40, said the couple had gotten into an argument and then went to a bar to have drinks the night before.
When they returned to Carter's apartment, Huff said "there was pushing, arguing, and shoving" before he "lost control" and choked her.
“She’s no longer here,” Huff allegedly told the dispatcher. “I killed her.”
Huff told detectives “he had killed Rebecca by strangling her with his hands and stabbed her at least twice in the chest after he believed she was deceased,” according to his arrest warrant.
Following the killing, Huff said he covered his girlfriend's body with a comforter and later returned with a friend to use crack cocaine in the apartment where Carter lay dead.
Huff was charged with murder in connection to Carter's killing. He is currently being held without bond at the Wake County Detention Center.
