Music icon Stevie Wonder celebrated his 74th birthday by being granted Ghanaian citizenship.
On Monday (May 13), Wonder took part in a ceremony at the Jubilee House, which is the seat of government in Ghana, where he took the Oath of Allegiance and received his Certificate of Citizenship, per GhanaWeb.
The ceremony comes after Wonder expressed interest in relocating to Ghana in a 2021 interview with Oprah Winfrey, During the interview, Wonder said he wanted to move to a more communal society and away from political turmoil in the U.S.
The Grammy award-winning artist was greeted by fans as he arrived at Kotoka International Airport ahead of Monday's ceremony. He also joined a local music troupe playing the drums before receiving his citizenship.
Kow Essuman, legal counsel to President Akufo-Addo, congratulated Wonder on his Ghanaian citizenship.
"Stevie Wonder is officially Ghanaian. He has just taken the Oath of Allegiance and received the Certificate of Citizenship by Registration at Jubilee House. Congratulations, Sir and welcome to Ghana," Essuman wrote on X.
The ceremony also fell on Wonder's 74th birthday.
