Disney Begins Developing Giannis Antetokounmpo Biopic

Reigning NBA MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo has announced that Disney has began developing a movie inspired by his life story called Greek Freak. The Milwaukee Bucks forward took to Twitter to share the outstanding news.

"Disney is making a movie based on my family’s story and they are searching for actors to play me and my brother, Thanasis, in our younger days. No experience [is] necessary! It helps if you resemble the handsome boys pictured below and have some basketball experience. Spread the word," he tweeted.

In just 25 years, the Greek big man has achieved massive success. Drafted in 2013, the Milwaukee Bucks leading scorer has won two NBA MVPs, earned four All-Star selections and the league's Defensive Player of the Year award. The Athens native may be the most successful athlete in his family, but he is not the only professional basketball player in the Antetokounmpo household. All five Antetokounmpo brothers are successful athletes. One of his younger brothers, Alexis, currently plays professionally in Spain. His older brother, Thanasis, plays with him in Milwaukee while his other older brother, Francis, has played both soccer and basketball professionally. Most notably, his younger brother, Kostas, won the 2020 NBA Championship as a member of the Los Angeles Lakers.

Antetokounmpo is not the first league MVP to have a movie made in his honor. Four-time NBA Champion LeBron James was the center of the 2008 film, More Than A Game. More recently, six-time NBA Champion Michael Jordan was the focus of the 2020 documentary, The Last Dance. ESPN has also hinted at plans to make a film documenting the final season of Kobe Bryant's illustrious career.

Greek Freak is being led by Nigerian director Akin Omotoso and it is expected to debut exclusively on Disney's streaming service, Disney+.
