An 11-year-old Black student had to have his finger amputated after injuring it while running away from his racist peers, Black Enterprise reports.

Raheem Bailey, a student at Abertillery Learning Community, has suffered racial and physical abuse from a group of his classmates since he began attending the school in September.

The tormenting came to a head on May 17 when Bailey had to jump over a fence to escape racist bullies and broke his finger in the process.

Shantal Bailey, Raheem's mother, took to Instagram to detail her son's abuse at school.

“Raheem was attacked and beaten by a group of children whilst in school. He was pushed to the ground and then repeatedly kicked," the mother wrote in a social media post. “Consequently, Raheem made a desperate attempt to leave the school grounds in order to escape the situation. I received a phone call from Raheem and then the school informing me of the incident.”

The day before the incident, the 11-year-old tearfully told Shantal about the bullying he had faced for months, the mother said. When Raheem reported the bullies “the teacher threatened him with detention despite him being the one that’s getting picked on.”

According to Raheem's mother, the Wales school told her that the bullies would be reprimanded the next day.

Instead, Shantal, Raheem, and his younger sibling found themselves waiting hours for an ambulance to assist the 11-year-old boy after the May 17 attack.

“Raheem, his baby brother, and I were taken to a minor injuries unit by the school bus, despite them knowing that his injury was severe," Shantal said on Instagram. "We spent the next five hours waiting for an ambulance to transfer us to the location where he would undergo surgery, in Swansea, 50 miles away from his home and school.”

After arriving at the hospital, doctors spent six hours trying to reattach Raheem's finger to no avail.

The mother claims that Abertillery Learning Community didn't contact her to check on the status of her son after undergoing surgery.

A Welsh government spokesperson told BBC, “We condemn bullying and racial harassment in any form and expect allegations and incidents of bullying and racism to be fully investigated by schools with appropriate action taken to address the matter and prevent further instances from happening.”

A GoFundMe has been started for Raheem to help with the cost of a prosthetic finger.
