Top Democrats Support Shalanda Young For Budget Director Nomination

On Wednesday (March 3), top Democrats in the House publicly endorsed Shalanda Young for the director of Office and Management and Budget. Young is President Joe Biden’s pick for deputy budget director, and has previously served as a top aide within the House Appropriations Committee for over 14 years. She made history as the first Black woman to serve as the staff director of the committee.

The endorsement comes a day after the White House withdrew its nomination of Neera Tanden as OMB director, after she requested to be removed from consideration. Several senators came out publicly to state they wouldn’t support Tanden’s nomination after raising concerns about previous tweets she’d made.

Young is being backed by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Majority Leader Steny Hoyer and Majority Whip Jim Clyburn.

“We have worked closely with her for several years and highly recommend her for her intellect, her deep expertise on the federal budget and her determination to ensure that our budget reflects our values as a nation,” the statement reads, according to a report by CNBC

Young has also received bipartisan support among lawmakers. During a Senate Budget Committee meeting on Tuesday (March 2), Republican Sens. Lindsay Graham and John Neely Kennedy publicly vowed their support to Young, signaling strong support for to take on the director role.

Currently, the Biden administration has not officially named a new nominee for the Director role.

Young is a native of Louisiana and holds degrees from Loyola University and Tulane University.
